Investigating Attitudes Towards Plug-In Vehicles and Charging by Current and Future Buyers

In this project we will field an online questionnaire survey (containing two survey instruments) to a random sample of plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric, hybrid electric, and gasoline powered vehicle owners in the United States. The aim of the project will be to identify what level of convenience and cost of charging is sufficient for consumers to adopt and continue to own plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) or battery electric vehicles (BEV). The survey will explore perceptions of electric vehicle charging (including fuel cost and convenience) and of electric vehicle attributes (range, cost, performance, etc.); travel behavior and household vehicle ownership patterns; charging access and use of home, work, and public charging (of current adopters); factors related to vehicle choices; along with other topics identified by the project team or sponsor during the project. The survey will contain an experiment that will allow us to estimate the impact of different charging locations, charging speeds, and charging costs on adoption decisions and ownership. The survey will allow us to identify what charging access is needed for buyers to adopt electric vehicles, continue to own and charge them, and will allow us to identify different levels of charging access needed for different consumers (e.g. by demographics, attitudes, vehicle preferences).
