Developing an Auto Operating Cost Methodology by Incorporating Alternative Fuel Technologies

This project aims to understand how the transition to alternative fuel vehicles ((AFVs) battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles) will impact travel demand in California. We will do this by investigating automotive operating costs experienced by California households. Using econometric methods, we will investigate travel behavior impacts and rebound due to AFVs using household and aggregate data. Finally, we will develop travel demand model modules and update existing modules with the findings from the operating cost and rebound analysis. This will allow travel demand models to better capture changes in travel due to AFVs. The benefit of our interdisciplinary and multi dataset approach will be robust research findings, confidence in updated travel demand models, and better foresight on VMT and travel behavior impacts of AFVs.

In this project, we are collaborating with UC Santa Barbara, who will be leading the integration of the Auto Operating Cost methodology with Travel Demand Modeling.
